Working for government organisations is very interesting for communication professionals. You can get the most out of your profession here. For example, think of mapping complex force fields, involving people in developing policy, advising on behavioural change, communication for large projects and being the spokesperson for media-sensitive topics. Working for the government requires specific knowledge of government communication. With the additional knowledge that you gain in the Government Communication masterclass, it is attractive for both you and government organisations to enter into an employment contract. As a foretaste, we asked Michiel Krom, Communications Advisor, coach, trainer and discussion leader, a few questions!

What will you learn during a masterclass on working as a Communications Advisor for the government?

“During the masterclass, you will gain a bird's-eye view of the government and the added value of communication within the government. You will learn about the operation of communication for government issues, talk to a senior communication advisor and we will discuss several government campaigns and the future of government communication. Interactive policy-making (participation), modern channels and techniques from the government, spokesperson for government agencies and working with Factor C will also be discussed. The course is partly customized: participants may (even happily) bring in their own topics that we will share.”

Who is the masterclass intended for?

“The masterclass is intended for communication professionals with at least five years of experience who want to work for the government (from local government to national government), professionals who want to work (more) for governments from an agency or independent position and for professionals who want to know whether working for the government is something for them. Participants who want to translate knowledge and insights from government communication into their own work are also welcome.”

Why work for the government?

“Working for the government is interesting because it almost always involves social issues that many people are confronted with. Communication in many forms is essential.”

How do you see the role of communication during a time of crisis?

“In times of crisis, communication plays a major role. After all, it is about providing clarity in uncertain times, people's behavior, dealing with the imposition of restrictions and understandable responses to them. It is about knowing exactly what is going on among the various groups and how they deal with it. It is also about the credibility of the government and administrators who propagate the policy. Communication is extremely important in this. During the upcoming course, we will definitely discuss the current crisis and how the government is dealing with it in terms of communication. Other current themes will also be discussed.”
